winter driving

It’s that time of year again when the weather can get nasty and quickly change driving conditions into a hazardous ordeal.  Don’t get caught in a dangerous winter driving situation – apply some simple steps to stay safe.  In this month’s blog, we review ways to protect you and your vehicle occupants during winter driving.

First, let’s look at how to increase your safety when driving in snowy or icy conditions.

Driving in Winter Weather

Snow and ice present numerous hazards to drivers because of the reduction in overall control of the vehicle on road surfaces.  If you have never driven in this type of weather, try to get an experienced winter driver in your place.  If that’s not possible, then prepare by learning more about driving on snow or ice before getting out on the road.

  • Always maintain a safe speed – especially if the roads are slick from snow or ice.
  • Keep a safe distance from other vehicles and avoid driving near snowplows.
  • Do not pump brakes or hit them hard, this will only result in skidding or losing control of the vehicle.
  • Use the brake pedal lightly, easing up on the gas when needing to slow down.
  • Keep vehicle momentum going by not stopping on hills. If you must stop for a light or stop sign, then accelerate slowly so that your tires can gain traction on the road.
  • Always use your headlights and change your tires to snow tires or chains, depending on the road conditions.
  • Always keep a supply of emergency items during winter driving. These may include a First Aid Kit, blanket and towels, extra clothing like jackets, gloves, and hats, road flares, road salts or cat litter, shovel, flashlight, and safety cones.  Always keep this kit in your vehicle.
  • Always dress appropriately when driving in winter conditions.

Second, let’s talk about what to do if you are driving and have an unexpected vehicle breakdown.

Staying Safe in a Winter Breakdown

Unless you are driving in remote areas, a vehicle breakdown does not have to be a terrible situation.  With a calm head, and some planning, you can stay safe until you receive help.

If you find yourself in harsh winter conditions, and experience a vehicle breakdown, keep these important tips in mind:

  1. Move your vehicle safely off the road. If visibility is low, make sure you are safely away from any other vehicles on the road.
  2. Put out road flares and/or safety cones.
  3. Attach brightly colored fabric or clothing to the outside of your vehicle to help emergency services easily spot it.
  4. Always stay with your vehicle; remain inside to avoid exposure to bad weather.
  5. Put on a hat and gloves to keep yourself warm.
  6. Call 911 if there is an emergency, or roadside assistance with your vehicle manufacturer or auto club.
  7. Keep your cell phone charged and avoid using it unless you are making calls for help.
  8. Only run the vehicle when you need to warm up. Make sure that the exhaust pipe is clear of any snow or debris.
  9. Avoid trying to move the vehicle if it is stuck in snow or ice. This will only exhaust your energy and expose you to cold.
  10. Always stay calm.
