There’s nothing more frustrating than running late for an appointment and getting into your vehicle, only to turn the key and nothing happens.  When your vehicle does not start, it can create instant panic – but an unresponsive vehicle is typically due to a short list of possible causes.  In this month’s blog post, we provide you with some guidance for when your vehicle will not start, how to diagnose the problem, and possibly fix the issue.

Possible Causes

There are several reasons why your vehicle might not start. Here are a few common ones:

1. Dead Battery: This is the most common reason. If your vehicle’s lights are dim or not working, or if you hear a clicking sound when you turn the key, your battery might be dead.
2. Bad Starter: If you hear a grinding noise when you try to start the vehicle, the starter might be the culprit.
3. Faulty Ignition Switch: If the car doesn’t start on some occasions, or if the engine cuts out randomly, this could be the cause.
4. Fuel System Issues: If your engine does not get enough fuel, it will not start. This could be due to a clogged fuel filter or problems with the fuel pump.

Diagnosing the Problem

To diagnose the problem, start by checking the battery. If the lights are dim or not working, try jump-starting the battery. If the vehicle starts, then the problem was likely a dead battery.

Make sure that you have the battery tested for its ability to hold the charge.  Sometimes you may be able to jumpstart the vehicle, but as soon as the vehicle is turned off again it may not start again.

If the battery does not appear to be the issue, listen for any unusual noises when you try to start the vehicle. A grinding noise might indicate a problem with the starter, while a clicking sound could mean there’s an issue with the ignition switch. 

Possible Fixes

Here are some possible fixes based on the diagnosis:

1. Dead Battery: Jump-start the vehicle. If it starts, drive around for at least 15 minutes to recharge the battery. If it does not start again after turning it off, you may need a new battery.
2. Bad Starter: This will likely need to be replaced by a professional mechanic.
3. Faulty Ignition Switch: This is also a job for a mechanic. They can replace the ignition switch for you.
4. Fuel System Issues: If you suspect a fuel system issue, it’s best to take your vehicle to a service station. They can check the fuel pump and replace the fuel filter if necessary.
